What is this module for?
It answers the mid-year question: if I have this income and these reliefs, what is the bill? It is not a tax return. It reads nothing from your books and saves nothing. It uses tax bands stored in the app for the current year of assessment. Check the year of assessment named at the bottom of the card, because the estimate is only as current as the bands stored for that year.
How do I estimate a tax bill?
- Open Calculators and press Income tax.
- In Chargeable income for the year, type everything assessable before reliefs.
- Check Total reliefs. It opens seeded with the RM 9,000 individual relief.
- Add EPF, insurance, lifestyle and the rest, and replace the figure with your total.
- In Zakat paid, type zakat and fitrah you have actually paid, if any.
- Read Tax payable in the dark card and the year of assessment at the bottom.
What is the difference between top band and effective rate?
- Top band is the rate on your last ringgit of income.
- Effective rate is your whole bill divided by your whole chargeable income.
- Do not use the top band to work out your total tax.
- Malaysia charges in slices, so only the top slice is charged at the top band.
How do I see what a relief is worth?
- Note the Tax payable figure, then add RM 1,000 to Total reliefs.
- Watch how much the tax falls. It is RM 1,000 times your top band rate.
- Put the RM 1,000 in Zakat paid instead and clear it from reliefs.
- The tax falls by the whole RM 1,000 because zakat is a rebate.
What if it says no tax bands are set up?
- The app has no band table for that year yet.
- Set up the fiscal year first, then come back.
- Press Open the tax module to go straight to Income Tax.
- Check the year of assessment named at the bottom of the card.
