How do I charge SST on a sale?
- Raise the invoice as usual on the Invoices screen.
- Pick a Tax code from the new column on each line.
- Choose New tax if the list does not have your code.
- Use Not subject to SST if the document carries no tax.
- Save the invoice to calculate the tax per line.
How do I post the sale correctly?
- Read the invoice's posting status. With automatic invoice sales on, the gross amount goes to Trade Debtors, Sales keeps the amount before SST, and the tax goes to SST Payable.
- If the status already names the amount sent to SST Payable, do not add another SST entry or a second debtor entry.
- Practice books default to manual posting, so there you record the gross debtor entry and the SST journal yourself.
- When the customer pays, record the payment on the invoice. It posts the full amount received, SST included, and clears Trade Debtors without treating SST as revenue.
- When you pay RMCD, use the SST Payment to Customs category, not an expense category.
How do I read the return?
- Open SST-02 Return to see the year being reported.
- Review the table for taxable amounts and output tax by code.
- Check the split between Sales tax and Service tax.
- Compare output tax less input tax to find Net SST payable.
- Note that the screen covers your whole financial year with no period picker, while the return is filed for a shorter taxable period, normally two months. Use these figures as a check before keying the return in the RMCD portal.
What this does to your books
SST-02 itself posts nothing, and switching SST on only writes two settings, the on switch and your registration number. The invoice screen makes the postings: with automatic invoice sales on, the gross total debits Trade Debtors, Sales keeps the amount before SST and the tax credits SST Payable. Recording the customer's payment posts Dr Cash & Bank (1000), Cr Trade Debtors (1100) for the gross amount. Paying RMCD under SST Payment to Customs debits SST Payable and credits Cash & Bank.
