How to record and value personal investments

Investments is your personal register for holdings such as shares, ASB, EPF and crypto. You record units, average cost and current price by hand, and the app works out cost, value and gain. There is no live price feed, and nothing posts to the business accounts. Only your personal Net Worth changes.

What is the Investments module for?

This module tracks personal wealth, not business assets. You record what you own, how many units, and what one unit is worth now. The app works out cost, market value and unrealised gain. It keeps personal finance separate from business bookkeeping, and it never goes online to look up prices, so your list of holdings stays on your device.

How do I record a new holding?

  1. Press Add holding.
  2. Pick the Type: Shares, ETF, Unit trust, Crypto, Gold, Bonds or Other.
  3. Type the Holding name, for example Maybank shares.
  4. Type the Units you hold. Fractions are allowed.
  5. Type the Avg cost, which is the average price for ONE unit.
  6. Type the Price now, which is what ONE unit is worth today.
  7. Press Save. The row shows Cost, Value and Gain / loss.

How do I update the value of a holding?

  1. Find the holding in the Holdings tab.
  2. Open the row actions and press Edit.
  3. Change Price now to the current figure from your broker or app.
  4. Leave Units and Avg cost alone unless they changed.
  5. Press Save. The Value over time chart gains one point.

How do I log a payout or dividend?

  1. Open the Payouts tab and press Log a payout.
  2. Pick the Holding it came from.
  3. Set Paid on to the date the money reached you.
  4. Pick the Type: Distribution, Dividend, Interest or Bonus.
  5. Type the Amount received. This must be more than zero.
  6. Press Save. The Income received card and yield on cost update.

How do I remove a holding I sold?

  1. Before you delete, write down the units, your average cost and the price you actually sold at, because the screen keeps no record of a sale.
  2. Open the row actions on the holding and press Delete.
  3. The holding is removed from the register and from your Net Worth.
  4. If the sale money reached an account you track, record it in Cash In & Out.

What this does to your books

Nothing on this screen posts a debit or credit. Saving a holding, updating a price, logging a payout or deleting a holding never moves your Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet or Trial Balance. The only place holdings appear is the Net Worth screen, where market value is added to your personal assets. If cash actually left or reached an account you track, record it separately in Cash In & Out, because it will not appear by itself.

Questions, answered

Does the Investments module update prices automatically?

No, there is no price feed in this app. Every price is a number you type manually. The app stamps the date you typed it so you can see if a valuation is old. This prevents sending your asset list to external servers.

Why is my investment not showing in the Profit and Loss?

This screen does not touch the business books. It writes to the personal holdings register only. No debit or credit reaches the business statements. Check the Net Worth report instead to see your personal asset value.

What is the difference between unrealised and realised gain?

Unrealised gain is a paper gain based on the price you typed, and it can go down tomorrow. Realised gain is money you actually have after selling. This screen has no Sell action and stores no sale, so the Gain / loss column is always unrealised. Keep a record of any realised gain yourself.
