How to track your personal net worth

Net Worth is a personal balance sheet that shows what you own minus what you owe. It is a snapshot of your current financial position, not a record of income. You manually enter asset and liability values in RM. Nothing you record here posts to your business accounts, so your Profit and Loss and Trial Balance remain unaffected.

What is the Net Worth module for?

This module calculates your personal net worth by subtracting total liabilities from total assets. It is a household tool, separate from your business books. The figures are current market values, not historical costs. It helps you see if you are getting ahead, which income alone does not show.

How do I add an asset I own?

  1. In the sidebar, under Personal finance, press Net Worth.
  2. In the What you own card, press Add asset.
  3. Type a Name you will recognise later, like Maybank savings or Toyota Vios.
  4. Pick a Category: Cash & savings, Property, Vehicle, Investment, EPF, ASB, ASNB or Other.
  5. Type the Value in RM. Use what it is worth today, not what you paid.
  6. Press Save. The row appears in the list and the three cards at the top recalculate at once.

How do I add a liability I owe?

  1. In the What you owe card, press Add liability.
  2. Name the debt and pick a Category: Mortgage, Car loan, Credit card, Personal loan or Other.
  3. Type the Value in RM as the amount OUTSTANDING today, not the original loan.
  4. Fill the three optional fields if you know them: Interest rate percent per year, Min. payment in RM, and Due day.
  5. Press Save. Total liabilities and Net worth update immediately.

How do I log EPF, ASB or ASNB contributions?

  1. Add the account as an asset first, with Category EPF, ASB or ASNB.
  2. Press the row to expand it. A Contributions section opens underneath.
  3. Press Add contribution, set the date and the amount. For EPF there is a second box for the employer's share.
  4. Press Save. The contribution is logged and the asset's value goes up by your amount plus the employer amount.
  5. Deleting a contribution takes the same amount back off the asset value. Do not also edit the asset value by hand, or the same money counts twice.

How do I keep my net worth accurate?

  1. Update the values every few months. Nothing here refreshes itself.
  2. Read the three cards: Total assets, Total liabilities and Net worth.
  3. Read the Composition bar to see how much of what you own is in one basket.
  4. Note that Total assets INCLUDES your Investments holdings, while the list shows only items added on this screen.
  5. Use the pencil icon on a row to edit it and the bin icon to remove it.

What this does to your books

Nothing is posted to the accounts. This writes personal asset and liability records only. There is no debit and no credit, and your Profit and Loss, Trial Balance and Balance Sheet do not move by a single sen. A business loan belongs on the Loans screen, and a business asset on Fixed Assets, not here.

Questions, answered

Does Net Worth affect my business accounts?

No. Nothing on this screen posts to your business ledger. It is a personal record only. Your business Profit and Loss and Trial Balance remain unchanged.

Should I use the original loan amount or the balance?

Use the outstanding balance today. For example, if you have a RM300,000 mortgage with RM120,000 left, enter RM120,000. Using the original amount understates your net worth.

Why is my Total assets higher than the list?

Total assets includes your Investments holdings. These are maintained on the Investments screen, not here. The list only shows items added directly on the Net Worth screen.
