How to use the Calculators module in Orbit Finance

Calculators is a set of tools for money questions your books cannot answer, like a price you are thinking of charging or a loan you have not signed. It acts as a scratch pad. You type figures, get an instant answer, and close the screen. Nothing is saved, and your accounts remain exactly as they were.

What is the Calculators module for?

Your books record what already happened. A calculator works on a number you have not committed to yet. It is a safe place to experiment because nothing is saved and nothing reaches your accounts. When a figure becomes a real decision, you must record it in the module that owns it.

How do I open a calculator?

  1. Open Calculators. The tiles are grouped under Your money and Your business.
  2. Press a tile to open that calculator. On a desktop it opens as a block beside your current screen.
  3. Type your figures. The answer updates as you type in the dark card, except for Margin and markup.
  4. Close the block with the cross in its header. On a phone the calculator opens full screen, and All calculators at the top left brings you back to the hub.

How can I reach calculators quickly?

  1. Look at the top bar for the round grid button labelled Calculators.
  2. Press it to see a small menu. Picking one opens it beside your work.
  3. Press See all in that menu to land on the hub instead.
  4. On a phone or narrow window, use the hub because the button is not shown.

Why do I see fewer tiles than a colleague?

  1. Money tools include Calculator, Car loan, Home loan, Debt payoff, Income tax and Runway.
  2. Property decisions adds What can I afford, Property purchase cost and RPGT on selling.
  3. Margin and markup only appears when the product catalogue is switched on.
  4. Break even only appears on a business file. A group with nothing in it is not drawn at all.

How do I take an answer into my books?

  1. Decide what the number actually is. A calculator result is an estimate, never a record.
  2. If it was a loan you signed, enter the agreement in Loans, which does post to your accounts. On a personal file, record the debt under Net Worth.
  3. If it was a price you agreed, put it on a quotation or an invoice.
  4. If it was a tax estimate, do the real working in Income Tax.

What this does to your books

Nothing on this hub or in any calculator posts to your accounts or saves your figures. Any posting happens later, in the module you carry the decision into, such as Loans or an invoice.

Questions, answered

Does the calculator save my figures?

No, nothing on any of these screens is saved. You can type anything, get an answer, close the screen, and your Trial Balance, Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet are exactly as they were. Write the number down if you need it later.

Why is the Margin and markup tile missing?

Margin and markup only appears when the product catalogue is switched on. You can switch this on in Features and Integrations. On a personal or couple file, the catalogue is hidden altogether, so the tile cannot be brought back.

Is the loan instalment figure final?

No, the instalment is an estimate. It leaves out fees the bank will add. Dated legal tables can change, and bank or tax authorities can assess your facts differently. Treat it as a planning estimate only.
